Panchakarma is a holistic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy rooted in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine. The term "Panchakarma" means "five actions" or "five treatments, " referring to the five primary procedures used to cleanse the body of toxins and restore balance to the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). These procedures are designed to eliminate impurities, strengthen immunity, and promote overall well-being. The Five Main Procedures of Panchakarma: 1. Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) Inducing vomiting to expel toxins from the stomach and respiratory tract, particularly effective for Kapha imbalances. 2. Virechana (Purgation Therapy) Use of herbal laxatives to cleanse the intestines, targeting Pitta-related disorders like skin diseases or digestive issues. 3. Basti (Medicated Enema) Administering medicated oils or herbal decoctions via enema to cleanse the colon, beneficial for Vata disorders and overall rejuvenation. 4. Nasya (Nasal Cleansing) Nasal administration of medicated oils or powders to clear sinus congestion and improve mental clarity. 5. Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) Removing impure blood using leeches or other methods, primarily for skin and blood-related conditions. (This is not always practiced in modern Panchakarma centers.)
